I have a mint condition Sony Playstation 1 Model SCPH-5501. In stock form, this is the Playstation 1 model that does not have the RCA connectors like Model SCPH-1001. However, it uses the same AKM DAC for quality analog audio output. What makes this modded player better than my modified Model SCPH-1001 is its improved laser unit design and orientation in the chassis. The laser unit is more reliable and does not require manual calibration. In my experience, this unit plays Redbook CDs and CD-R discs signficantly better than Model SCPH-1001. The modifications include installing Vampire CM1F RCA chassis connectors along with a modified output stage and upgraded capacitors in the power supply. These mods work well together to improve the sound. Once modded, Model SCPH-5501 sounds equal or slightly better than a modded Model SCPH-1001. Compared to a stock Model SCPH-1001, the modded Model SCPH-5501 provides:- Deeper, extended and more detailed bass. - Extended high frequencies. The sound is no longer rolled off at both frequency extremes as some have claimed with the stock Playstation. There is greater air in the presentation and the recording venue acoustics are better conveyed with improved detail and extension of high frequencies. - Higher level of detail while retaining the midrange warmth of the stock unit (this is really evident once the output stage capacitors have had some time to burn-in). - Larger, more expansive soundstage in all three dimensions. - Improved imaging. I believe that with greater detail, the space around the performers is better defined. You can read about other tweaks on the Audiogon discussion thread where I have posted some of my findings. The best way I can describe the result of the mods is that it addresses the weaknesses of the stock unit and retains all the sonic virtues of the stock unit. I was careful not to completely change the sound of the Playstation. Please note that the audio output will only come through the RCA audio jacks, and not through the AV Multi-Out port after the output stage modification is performed. The video output from the AV Multi-Out port still operates fine. The best way I can describe this CD player is having the best sound quality a modded Model SCPH-1001 can offer without the reliability problems of the older laser design.
