Introduction

The G08 is one of the best examples why redbook CD players are not dead. One major reason for that is the brand name Meridian. Meridian has always been on the forefront of digital audio and it is showcased here in the G08.

Musicality is the key note here. The G08 is all about focusing on the music and how it encapsulates the natural flow of musical notes from the silver disc out into your speakers.

At its former $4,000 MSRP, the G08 build quality and finish is quite impressive with an all-round metal casing and glass top. Its standard remote is a full system unit where it will also operate other Meridian products which Meridian "encourages" its G08 to be paired up with. We didn't do that of course and paired with a variety of different brands and never had one pairing that was disappointing. So kudos to the great design of the G08.

Tone Audio Review:

Our vote for the “last CD player you need to buy-within reason,” the G08 offered a delicate yet engaging sound with “great weight and fullness to the bass.”¨Ü The G08 is one of the most compelling choices at its price point, and we feel that you’d have to spend a lot more money to better its combination of immediacy, balance and rhythm.

Head-Fi Review:

I've never heard a digital source come so close to vinyl before. The player had perfectly controlled bass which was incredibly articulate. Midrange was perfectly tonal, without any hint of distortion or ringing at all. The best part about the player, though, was its high end. The highs were extremely crisp, clean, and clear, but had absolutely none of the fuzz that I was accustomed to hearing from digital sources. Lots of texture, basically no haze at all. The soundstage resembled that of the LP of Norah Jones that I heard at Todd's place. Extremely expansive, in front of my head like it should be, and incredibly precise. I was shocked by the incredibly realistic sound and presence offered by the guitars on the recording, as well as the dynamic range, which just erupted at times, and went down to a near whisper at others, without any fiddling from the volume knob.
