For sale is a Wright Sound WPL-20 preamp. I bought this item directly from Wright Sound two years ago. The preamp functions flawlessly, and sounds great. It includes a very nice phono section, which is essentially the well reviewed WPP100C. The only noticeable cosmetic flaw is a loss of some of the silk screen lettering on the WPS-06 above the on switch.

The preamp has three line level inputs, a phono input, a tape monitor loop, and two preamp outputs. It includes a switch to select between RIAA and 78 phono equalization curves. There are adjustments for making the phono and other line level the same volume.

Sadly, the Wright Sound company is no longer in business after the death of its founder, George Wright. The website is no longer online.

The 6FH5 tubes were just replaced. I have fresh NOS spares for the 12SN7, 6X5 and 6FY.

Tube Complement: (1) 6X5 (1) 6FY7 (2) 12SN7GT (3) ECC82/12AU7 (4) 6FH5/FY5

Specifications Frequency Response: greater than 20 to 20kHz. Tested 7 Hz to 50kHz +/- 2dB (line stage) Phono stage: RIAA curve and later-type RCA 78 curve +/- 1% Input: Phono .5mV to 100mV at 47k ohms Hum negligible-noise 90dB line stage Input source: 50mV to 4V at 100k Output level: nominal 1 to 2V range (will drive up to 20V peak-to-peak) at 2k ohms and above Power: 117V 60hz 40W (overseas models available on request for additional cost)

An excerpt from Wright Sound faq: "Does the WPL20 sound as well as the WPP200C and the WLA12A together?

The WPL20 has both the WPP100C and the WLA12A included in it's design, along with extra source input stage stage to farther isolate and correct phase for the WPL20. Additional features enchant the 20 to gain additional control over input source gain, EQ selection for RIAA and RCA 78 phono selection. The fact of combining these into one unit, reduces the problem with too many interconnects and so by combining the power supplies and functions, you great a great musical experience for those who need phono and line stages in the WPL20 for a reduced cost."

An excerpt from Wright Sound tech talk:

"WPL20:

The Phono Section: The phono cartridge jack is coupled directly into the grid of the first stage. The cathode is bypassed by a small capacitor paralleled with a large value filter to bring the cathode reactance as close to ground as possible. The frame element is tied directly to ground, and the plate is coupled through a capacitor into the passive RIAA equalizer circuit into the next stage grid. The cathode and frame are hooked up as in the first stage. The plate is coupled to the gain level control for each channel into the mu / series pass stages into position one of the phono / line input select switch.

The Line Stages: The source selector switch between phono and line section inputs. The source input selector switch is wired into the line input amplifier through the source level switch then also into the phono / line input select switch which then goes through the mode switch. From there the signal goes through the balance pot and volume control potentiometers. The wiper of the volume control is connected to the grid of the first line stage, whose cathode is un bypassed in low level position of the rear gain switch. The plate is hooked directly to the grid of the final cathode output, making this a true Class A series pass stage. By using this hookup, the stage develops gain and doesn't load the volume control, because the first stage never draws very much grid current. The cathode is then coupled through a large coupling capacitor into the output jacks with a series of isolation resistors of about 600 ohms each. The WPL20 is powered by the separate WPS06 Power Supply, making this a low hum and noise preamp."
