This custom built 12B4 Single-Ended Triode amplifier has 1.5 watts per channel output and very low hum levels, making it especially well suited for very high efficiency loudspeakers. We used this with great success on our Odeon La Boheme and Lowther speakers. The circuit is based on this design: http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/0902/levinson.htm. The most significant changes I made to this design include:
- GZ34 rectifier tube
- power supply splits into two channels at the two chokes right after the rectifier tube for better channel separation
- Russian paper-in-oil coupling caps
- non-inductive wirewound plate resistors for 6AU6 tubes (triode wired)
- upgraded James 6113HS output transformers
- ladder style stepped attenuator for perfect channel balance
- high quality Panasonic 105 degree caps used for filtering and bypass
- input and output jacks are high quality James Audio parts
Since building this amplifier, I have gone the next step and built mono block versions with choke input power supplies and tube regulation. This stereo amplifier sounds very nearly as good as the monoblocks! If I had it to do all over again, I'm not sure I'd do the extra work for the small difference in performance.
Using 12B4 power tubes and 6AU6 drivers ensures that you will not go broke replacing tubes. These tubes are included with the amp (also shown in the photos):
- 1 X GZ34 Mullard rectifier
- 2 X Telefunken 6AU6 driver tubes (triode wired)
- 2 X GE 12B4 output tubes
This is truly a one of a kind, beautiful sounding Single-Ended Triode amplifier. I just don't need the stereo version now that I've built the monoblocks. If you are not thrilled with this amplifier I would be happy to have it back. So, this is truly a "no risk" purchase other than the cost of shipping both ways.
