Hafler Factory built DH-220 with rack mount handles with mono bridge kit Dh-222. Can be operated in stereo or mono at 120 watts per or 300 watts mono. Here's the story on this amp. I bought it a month ago from a member on Agon. He was the owner of 2 of these that he had modified at Atlas Audio Repair in Pittsburgh, PA. They were based on a number of mods by Dick West in the DIY audio forum some years back. Power went up and THD went down to below .001%. The mods were:
1. 35,000 micofarads of filtering as opposed to 10,000 mf originally. High quality polyproplylene bypass caps were used.
2. The fixed power cord is now a IEC one so you can use whatever you want.
3. The original binding posts were removed and the amp was fitted with heavy duty 5 way.
4. The inputs were changed out for high quality gold plate ones.
5. The fuses have been re-wired so the they protect the amp but are out of the signal path as they originally were.
6. Star grounding. I bought the Hafler with the idea of an amp I would swap in to my main system (tubes). When it was not doing that I planned on using it as a back surround amp in the HT system. I am now not going to do either. I added a new processor to the HT system and I like listening to music though it so no reason to swap in an SS amp to the 2 channel system. I now need an amp with a trigger to make it family friendly. When I did swap it into the 2 channel system, I was more than pleasantly surprised. After the 45 min warm up this amp was as smooth sounding as any of the good SS amps I have owned. I had a friend bring his McCormack DNA220 over (used to own it) and we had a shoot out. The Hafler held its own with good bass, clear/clean mid and extended highs. The McCormack was better in the low bass and when it got up beyond 95 db on 87% efficient Vandersteen 3aSigs. All in all it was a sound I could live with for a long time. The Hafler DH-220 is on the Audiophile List of 100 best components.
I added the Hafler rack handles to the front to help out the plain look of the face plate. It now looks nice and tidy. There are a couple of very small scratches on top. 3 feet away and they can't be seen. The amp will be double boxed, comes with a manual and all modifications highlighted on the original schematic. You will not be disappointed.
