GROUP OF Eleven 6A3 VACUUM TUBES PLUS ONE 6B4G DOUBLE TESTED - $400

I am continuing to clean out some equipment and tubes, so I have this group of 6A3/6B4G tubes available.

Previously this listing was for 10 6A3, but I found another nice one so I am including it at no extra charge. Details of the tube are below, but no photo is added. Please inquire if you want a picture.

Tubes #1-3 are National Union branded 6A3 with dates codes of KC, LR and PR.

Tubes #4 and #5 are both Ken Rad branded 6A3, but I cannot see any date codes.

Tube #6 is a Sylvania branded 6A3 with a date code of 2V.

Tube #7 is an Emerson branded 6A3 with a date code of FGP1.

Tubes #8 and #9 are Raytheon branded 6A3 with a common date code of C6 and have what appear to be original boxes (in poor shape).

Tube #10 is a 6A3 with no brand that I can see, but it has black glass and looks like a GE or Ken Rad made tube.

Tube #11 is the 6B4G, is Philco branded with an engraved base, and has a date code of 7O. The base on this tube is ever so slightly loose.

Tube #12 is the added 6A3, and is Philco branded with an engraved base, a date code of 6S, an internal support and spring loaded filaments.

Tubes #1-7, #11 and #13 have dual connected plates, while tubes #8-10 have dual flat plates. Tubes #4, #5 and #11 have spring filaments.

I first tested these tubes on my Westmore 501 (gov’t version of Triplett 3444) connected to a regulated power supply.

The Westmore has an odd setting for 6A3, so when testing the 6A3 I used the 2A3 setting at Vf of 6.3.

On the Westmore, the Gm reject point for 6A3 (2A3) is 2600 and average spec is 5200, and for 6B4G the Gm reject point for is 2200 and average spec is 4300. I am not sure why this would be different since both tubes are electrically the same (only a different pinout).

I also tested these tubes for plate current on the Westmore. While there is no Westmore spec for plate current, the settings on the Westmore indicate that the test parameters are 250 V plate and -40V grid bias. The Class A plate current spec for 6A3/6B4G at 250 V plate and -45 V grid bias is 60 mA (zero signal).

The results are as follows:

Tube #1 5400/72 mA

Tube #2 5300/71 mA

Tube #3 4900/64 mA

Tube #4 4800/62 mA

Tube #5 4800/60 mA

Tube #6 5200/71 mA

Tube #7 5000/60 mA

Tube #8 4400/62 mA

Tube #9 5200/66 mA

Tube #10 5200/70 mA

Tube #11 5000/60 mA

Tube #12 5000/68 mA

I also screened the tubes on a reasonably calibrated B&K 747 connected to a regulated power supply. Since the B&K 747 does not have a 4-pin socket, the 6A3 were tested as 6B4G using an adapter. The “GOOD” scale on the B&K 747 ranges from a numerical value of about 68 to 120, but I can find no specific indication of what an “average new” tube should test. I have tested several different “new in box” tubes, and my experience is that the “average new” number will vary based on the tube. Also, the scale is also not very detailed, so the numbers I give are approximate (+/- 2).

The results are as follows:

Tube #1 115

Tube #2 115

Tube #3 108

Tube #4 100

Tube #5 102

Tube #6 112

Tube #7 104

Tube #8 99

Tube #9 108

Tube #10 115

Tube #11 106

All tubes were clean for shorts, leakage and gas on both testers. I would note that a couple gave a very (very) slight grid emission reading when initially tested on the Westmore, but when retested that dropped to a normal reading (probably a little off gas that was captured by the flashing).

All in all, the results are very consistent between two very different testers.

While they all test nicely, all of the above have to be considered "used".

My strong preference is to sell as a group, but I might consider splitting them up for the right offer.

I also have lots of other tubes so feel free to ask about those as well.

I can provide additional pictures or info on request.
