Rating 9 because I am second owner. The PA-1A phono pre-amp is a class A designed amplifier that is extremely quiet, and produces a crisp, detailed soundstage. With the ZYX Universe II X (output @ 0.24 mV) cart, there was more than adequate gain for me (50-65 dB). I ran with 2-12AV7 (RCA), 2-12AX7 (Mullard) and 2-6GH8 (Tungsram). The 12AV7 can be substituted with the 12AU7’s for less gain or 2-12AX7’s for additional gain – whatever your preference. I will also include the tubes that came with the unit (2- 12AX7 JJ Gold Pins, 4-12AX7 The Tube Store), since I will have no use for them.
