I'm the original owner of this excellent condition Apex Peak headphone amplifier and it's upgraded linear power supply (the Volcano.) The amp comes with its original boxes, power cord, DC umbilical cord, and Sylvania 6SN7/GTB tube as well as the original Tung-Sol 6SN7/GTB re-issued tube.

Information from the manufacturer:

"The Peak is a hybrid amplifier, pairing a 6SN7 vacuum tube voltage amplifier stage with a class-A single-ended MOSFET output stage. Unlike some hybrid amplifiers on the market, the Peak generates a true high voltage B+ supply to operate the tube where it belongs – at a very linear operating point. The single-ended MOSFET output stage is DC-coupled to the outputs to provide excellent drive capability and deep bass response. No negative feedback whatsoever is used in the Peak.

Three inputs, selected by a front panel switch, and a line output (which is automatically muted when you plug in your headphones) are provided, so you can use the Peak both as a headphone amplifier and a pre-amp for a loudspeaker system. Relays are used to keep the signal path short and direct.

The standard Peak is powered by an external switching power supply. For ultimate fidelity, the Volcano, an optional linear power supply is available that matches the amplifier in appearance and performance. The Volcano uses a low-noise toroidal transformer and a massive bank of filter capacitors to provide high peak currents without significant voltage drop."

Srajan Ebaen of Six Moons favorably compared the Peak/Vocano to other headphone amps costing much more. "From what I know and purely speaking to sonics rather than external build quality, the Peak belongs to the general class which includes the likes of the ModWright LS-100, Woo Audio Model 5 and Eddie Current Balancing Act. Seeing how those are costlier—though also featured differently, with the ModWright adding i/o ports and options and remote control, the Woo driving speakers directly—all is as it should be regarding the comments one paragraph up. Todd Green aka Todd the Vinyl Junkie did a very clever thing by roping in free agent Pete Millett to work as chief designer for Apex Audio. There's no substitute for experience. Both men contribute that very thing which no school can teach and which no money can really buy. With their Peak machine you do buy it and the return on investment is properly high as befits our economically troubled times."

Tom Martin of HiFi+ concluded that "...BOTTOM LINE - Apex’s Peak/Volcano has resolution to match the best and delivers an overall sound that pairs well with a variety of headphones."

There are many other great reviews, but they all conclude that the Apex Peak with the Volcano is an amazing amp.
