Pictured and up for a sale is a very nice Sony STR-7800 SD AM/FM Stereo receiver. I believe this was their top of the line at the time it was manufactured between 1977 and 1982. It had a staggering list price of $700, and that 30+ years ago! Boasting a power output of 125 watts per channel (8 Ohm, 20Hz-20kHz at no more than .07 THD), it was intended to compete with the powerful Marantz, Pioneer and Sansui receivers of its day. At 50 plus pounds, it is built like a tank, more like military gear than later Japanese electronics. These vintage Sony receivers are real sleepers; this unit for example stacks up evenly with a Pioneer SX-1050, but few enthusiasts know about it.
Features -
- enormous toroidal transformer (can see it through the top vent in the 6th picture)
- two phono inputs
- one aux input
- two tape inputs
- capability of running 3 pairs speakers (two pr at a time)
- external adapter loop
- 4 gang tuner section
- Dolby FM compatibility
- Measures - 19"W x 19.5"D x 6.5"H
- Weight - 50.26 pounds (prior to packing)
This receiver is BIG and HEAVY, I apologize, but the shipping will likely be expensive to states towards the East. Condition - I have been running this beauty for weeks now and it works great. Put through its paces on all inputs and outputs and I am pleased to report that it is almost 100% functional. The only thing not functional is the "Tuning" meter; for some reason it stays fixed in the middle position. Not really a problem, I just used the signal strength and Stereo indicators to assure that I tuned into stations. Cosmetically it is very nice. There are a few nicks on the top front edge of the face and a couple of nicks in the wood sides, all of which can be seen in the pictures. There are also corner chips to the right side plate at the rear.
